Cyber Escape

University of Pittsburgh Cyber Escape Rooms

About the Project

Cyber Escape is an interactive, story-driven cyber escape room experience that simulates digital investigations. Players analyze evidence, connect clues, and solve security challenges across three themed games: The Eras Breach, The Bastion, and Identity Unmasked.

Problem Statement

Why this exists

Technology is at an all time high, and cybersecurity threats are more prevalent than ever. However, traditional educational methods often struggle to engage learners in complex cybersecurity concepts and skills. Cyber Escape addresses this gap by providing an immersive, gamified learning experience that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy in a fun and interactive way.

Background & Context

Capstone build

This project was developed as a Capstone for the University of Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information in Spring 2024, and in the Spring 2026 semester it has been revamped and remade to be offered to students as a playable experience. The project draws inspiration from real-world cyber incidents, popular escape room formats, and educational gamification principles to create an immersive learning environment.

Project Goals & Objectives

Deliverables
  • Revamp and restructure the project from the original 2024 version to a more polished, playable experience
  • Enhance visual design and user interface elements
  • Improve game mechanics and puzzle design for better engagement
  • Optimize performance and accessibility across different devices
  • Ensure all content is fully responsive and accessible to all experience levels of cybersecurity

Methodology Overview

Process
  • Research: Gathered inspiration from real incident patterns and cyber challenge formats
  • Design: Created wireframes + visual system (typography, spacing, glass panels)
  • Development: Implemented pages using HTML/CSS/JS with reusable components
  • Testing: Iterated based on clarity, pacing, and usability feedback
  • Deployment: Published to GitHub Pages for public access
